China.org.cn: China is expected to eliminate absolute poverty this year. What is your comment on China's efforts in poverty reduction?

Ina Marciulionyte: In spite of obstacles created by COVID-19, we welcome the plans of the Chinese government to achieve its goal of eliminating absolute poverty by the end of the year. This would create better conditions for all Chinese people to overcome the challenges of today. We believe, the Chinese government has a plan and means to eliminate absolute poverty.

China.org.cn: In your opinion, what impact will the COVID-19 pandemic bring to China's goal of eradicating extreme poverty by the end of 2020?

Ina Marciulionyte: Chinese Premier Li Keqiang in the Report on the Work of the Government has indicated that the country has to redouble its efforts to minimize the negative effects of the virus for economy and social development. He has also presented the main targets and policies to be implemented to achieve the government‘s goals, poverty alleviation being one of the most important among them. A lot of countries in the world are still struggling with COVID-19 pandemic and its consequences. They have been and are closely watching China’s response to COVID-19 and how China is dealing with its negative impact on the economy of the country and people‘s lives.

China.org.cn: What other challenges will China face in poverty reduction after eliminating absolute poverty in 2020?

Ina Marciulionyte: To my mind, economic recovery is the main challenge not only to China but to all world economies. There being many uncertainties in the world economic and trade environment, China has not set a specific target for economic growth this year. There might be some other challenges that are impossible to predict now.

China.org.cn: What are your suggestions on furthering international cooperation in poverty reduction?

Ina Marciulionyte: One of our proposals is to continue transparent and active international trade. International trade and related growth of production of goods and services as well as development of industry around the world lead to an increase of employment, an increase in people’s income, and the development of social equality. Lithuania is interested in bilateral trade, we believe that China is also interested in it. Our joint efforts and determination to overcome public health emergencies, such as COVID-19, as well as stability and peace in the world are essential to the prosperity of the global economy.
